Uganda is mourning the sudden loss of one of its prominent political figures, Moses Karangwa Kalisa, Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Duties and long-serving National Resistance Movement (NRM) Chairperson for Kayunga District, who passed away following a fatal road accident on Sunday evening.
According to reports, the accident occurred around 9 p.m. at Ssuka (or Suuka) Village along the Kayunga-Jinja Highway, near the Lake Oil Pump Fuel station. Karangwa was traveling in a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with two bodyguards when the vehicle reportedly hit a motorcycle and overturned. He sustained serious injuries and was first rushed to Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital before being transferred to Nakasero Hospital in Kampala, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver and bodyguards sustained minor wounds, while the motorcyclist escaped unhurt. Police have since visited the scene and are investigating the exact circumstances of the crash.
Minister for the Presidency, Milly Babalanda, confirmed the sad news in an official statement: “It is with deep sorrow that I announce the passing of the Senior Presidential Advisor and Chairperson of NRM Kayunga District, Moses Karangwa Kalisa, following a tragic accident.”
Karangwa, a seasoned politician, businessman, and farmer, had served as Kayunga NRM District Chairperson for over a decade. He was widely credited with strengthening the party’s structures in the district and was recently appointed as Senior Presidential Advisor by President Yoweri Museveni. His supporters described him as a dedicated mobilizer who brought visible changes to the area.
Tributes have poured in from across the political divide. NRM members in Kayunga held mourning meetings, describing his death as a big loss to the party and the district. However, social media reactions have been mixed, with some sections of the public — particularly those who accused him of land grabbing and other controversies — expressing celebration rather than grief.
His daughter, Jacky Birungi, and other family members are yet to issue a detailed family statement as burial arrangements are being finalized.
The death of Karangwa comes at a time when Uganda continues to record several high-profile road accidents, raising fresh questions about road safety on major highways.
