Premier League champions Arsenal and FA Cup holders Manchester City will clash in the 2026 Community Shield this Sunday, August 16, at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, marking the traditional curtain-raiser to the new English football season.
The match, scheduled for a 3pm BST kick-off, has been moved to Wales after Wembley Stadium was booked for a series of concerts by The Weeknd. It will be the first Community Shield staged in Cardiff since 2006.
Arsenal, who claimed the Premier League title last season under Mikel Arteta, enter the fixture as reigning league champions. Manchester City, managed by Pep Guardiola, arrive as FA Cup winners and perennial challengers. The two clubs have dominated English football in recent years, regularly contesting major honours.
Recent meetings have been tightly contested. In the 2025/26 Premier League season, the sides drew 1-1 at the Emirates in September 2025, with Gabriel Martinelli equalising late for Arsenal after Erling Haaland had given City the lead. Later, in April 2026, City edged a crucial title-race clash 2-1 at the Etihad, with Haaland scoring the winner. City also defeated Arsenal 2-0 in the 2026 Carabao Cup final at Wembley, thanks to a brace from Nico O’Reilly.
Both teams head into the Community Shield with incomplete pre-season preparations. Arsenal have mixed results in friendlies, while several key City players, including Haaland, only recently returned to full training. Rodri remains absent for City following back surgery.
Expected line-ups point to strong starting XIs. Arsenal are likely to feature David Raya in goal, with a defence including Ben White, William Saliba or Cristhian Mosquera, Gabriel Magalhães and Riccardo Calafiori or Piero Hincapié. Martin Ødegaard, Declan Rice and new signing Bruno Guimarães are expected in midfield, supporting attackers such as Bukayo Saka, Viktor Gyökeres and Gabriel Martinelli.
City are expected to field Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal, with a back line of Matheus Nunes, Rúben Dias, Marc Guéhi and Joško Gvardiol. Elliot Anderson or Mateo Kovačić could partner in midfield, with Rayan Cherki, Jérémy Doku and Antoine Semenyo supporting Haaland up front.
The Community Shield has often been decided by narrow margins or penalties in recent years. Arsenal have won their previous two meetings with City in this competition. Sunday’s encounter offers both managers an early chance to assess squad depth and set the tone for the 2026/27 campaign.
