Gongodyo, a formidable forward for Uganda’s Rugby Cranes national 15s team and a key player for Stanbic Black Pirates Rugby Club, had just returned from Nairobi, Kenya, where he proudly represented his country in the Enterprise Cup final. Described by teammates and coaches as a humble, disciplined, and hardworking athlete with a gentle soul despite his powerful build on the field, Sydney was on his way home when the unthinkable happened.
According to police reports and eyewitness accounts, Gongodyo was falsely accused of snatching a woman’s handbag in the Masulira Zone area along Upper Naguru East Road. A chaotic crowd, reportedly including boda-boda riders and members of the public, quickly turned violent, attacking him with sticks, logs, and stones. Despite his pleas for mercy, the mob continued the assault until police intervened and rushed the severely injured player to Mulago National Referral Hospital. He succumbed to his injuries later that evening.
The Uganda Police Force has acted swiftly, arresting multiple suspects. As of June 14, at least 10 individuals are in custody, with four — Joseph Owino, Henry Kabugo, Elly Mundoni, and Obed Mugwisa — formally charged with murder at the Kampala City Hall Magistrate’s Court on June 12.
