In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s sporting fraternity and beyond, 27-year-old national rugby player Sydney Gongodyo Gyabi was brutally beaten to death by a mob in the Bukoto suburb of Kampala on Friday, June 5, 2026. What began as a false accusation of theft ended in the loss of a talented athlete, engineering student, father, and son — a stark reminder of the dangers of mob justice in the country.
Gongodyo, a formidable forward for Uganda’s Rugby Cranes national 15s team and a key player for Stanbic Black Pirates Rugby Club, had just returned from Nairobi, Kenya, where he proudly represented his country in the Enterprise Cup final. Described by teammates and coaches as a humble, disciplined, and hardworking athlete with a gentle soul despite his powerful build on the field, Sydney was on his way home when the unthinkable happened.
According to police reports and eyewitness accounts, Gongodyo was falsely accused of snatching a woman’s handbag in the Masulira Zone area along Upper Naguru East Road. A chaotic crowd, reportedly including boda-boda riders and members of the public, quickly turned violent, attacking him with sticks, logs, and stones. Despite his pleas for mercy, the mob continued the assault until police intervened and rushed the severely injured player to Mulago National Referral Hospital. He succumbed to his injuries later that evening.
The Uganda Police Force has acted swiftly, arresting multiple suspects. As of June 14, at least 10 individuals are in custody, with four — Joseph Owino, Henry Kabugo, Elly Mundoni, and Obed Mugwisa — formally charged with murder at the Kampala City Hall Magistrate’s Court on June 12. They have been remanded to Luzira Prison until June 23 as investigations continue. Police spokesperson Rachel Kawala confirmed ongoing efforts to apprehend additional suspects.
The rugby community has united in grief and tribute. Stanbic Black Pirates honored their fallen star with a minute’s silence and a strong 15-3 victory over Platinum Credit Heathens in the Uganda Rugby Premiership semifinal first leg. Fans wore shorts in his trademark style, chanting “#JusticeForSydney.” The club retired his No. 7 jersey, while the Uganda Rugby Union issued a heartfelt tribute, describing Gongodyo as “a proud servant of the game” whose achievements will remain part of Uganda rugby’s legacy.
Gongodyo was laid to rest on Tuesday, June 9, in Buweri Town Council, Sironko District, in an emotional ceremony attended by family, friends, rugby players, and sports officials. Mourners, including his mother, highlighted his character and called for accountability. His wife shared the pain of losing her husband and father to their one-year-old son. Family members described him as the pride of the Bamasaba community and a national asset.
This senseless killing has reignited national conversations about mob violence and the need for stronger public education on due process. Rugby officials and citizens alike have urged President Yoweri Museveni to ensure a transparent public hearing, sending a strong message against such acts.
As Uganda mourns one of its rising sports talents, the story of Sydney Gongodyo serves as both a celebration of his contributions to the game and a painful call for justice and societal change. Gone too soon, but never forgotten.
TrendingUg.com extends deepest condolences to the Gongodyo family, the rugby fraternity, and all who knew and loved Sydney. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
