In one of the swiftest and most decisive deals of the early summer transfer window, Real Madrid have secured the signing of Spanish international left-back Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal worth up to £51.8 million (€60 million).
The 27-year-old defender has signed a six-year contract at the Santiago Bernabéu, tying him to the club until June 2032. The package includes an initial fee of approximately £47.5 million (€55 million) plus £4.3 million (€5 million) in performance-related add-ons.
A Deal That Came Together in 36 Hours
The transfer unfolded with remarkable speed. According to multiple reports and Cucurella himself, the entire process—from initial contact to agreement—took fewer than 48 hours, with the player describing it as happening “very fast.” While on international duty with Spain at the 2026 World Cup, Cucurella received the call that would change his career. “They called me in the morning and told me that the clubs had talked about everything,” he said. “I had no doubt, it was a big step for my career.”
Real Madrid’s new manager, José Mourinho, played a pivotal role in targeting Cucurella as a priority reinforcement. Sources indicate Mourinho personally reached out to the player, expressing his desire to work with him and confidence in his ability to adapt to the demands of Los Blancos. “He told me he was really looking forward to working with me, that I would adapt very well,” Cucurella revealed. The defender added that he “can’t wait to start working with him.”
From Brighton to Stamford Bridge to the Bernabéu
Cucurella’s journey has been one of steady ascent. After impressing at Brighton & Hove Albion, he joined Chelsea in 2022 for a then-club-record £62-63 million. Despite an initially rocky adaptation to life in west London, he matured into one of the Premier League’s most reliable left-backs, valued for his tenacity, attacking overlaps, and defensive resilience.
His departure comes at a transitional time for Chelsea. With incoming manager Xabi Alonso facing squad rebuilding challenges following a difficult previous season, losing an experienced international represents a significant blow. Chelsea will view the substantial fee as a strong return on their investment.
For Real Madrid, the signing addresses defensive vulnerabilities exposed last season. Cucurella brings La Liga familiarity, 27 caps for Spain, and the versatility to operate as a wing-back or in a back four—attributes that align perfectly with Mourinho’s pragmatic, winning philosophy.
Beating Domestic Rivals Real Madrid reportedly fended off interest from Atlético Madrid and Barcelona to land their man. The move has even triggered FIFA solidarity payments benefiting several Spanish clubs,
