Kampala Capital City Authority has taken a step to help working mothers. They have opened a room at City Hall where mothers can breastfeed their babies. This room is safe, clean and private.
The room was opened on Wednesday. This is a help to mothers who work and have babies. Kampala Capital City Authority did this because August is Breastfeeding Month. During this month people talk about how good breastfeeding’s for babies and mothers.
KCCA Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki said that the room is very important. It shows that Kampala Capital City Authority cares about its employees. Many mothers have to balance work and taking care of their babies. This room will make it easier for them to do both.
Sharifah Buzeki also said that the room will give mothers freedom and respect at work. The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition helped Kampala Capital City Authority make the room. Sharifah Buzeki was happy about this partnership. She said that it shows how working together can help employees.
There are already rooms like this in some markets in Kampala. Now there is one at City Hall too. This means that Kampala Capital City Authority is trying to make all its buildings friendly to mothers.
Doctors and health experts know that breastfeeding is very good for babies. It helps them stay healthy and strong.. Many mothers in Uganda stop breastfeeding when they go back to work. This is because they do not have a place to breastfeed or they do not have enough time.
Laura Ahumuza Turinawe from the Ministry of Health was happy about the room. She said that it is an example of what institutions can do to help mothers. She also said that workplaces should support mothers who want to breastfeed.
Many people on media are talking about the new room. They want other institutions to do the thing. One person wrote, “It is hard for mothers. I hope other institutions can do the same.”
The new room at City Hall is an example of how small things can make a big difference. Kampala Capital City Authority is showing that it cares about families. This is not a good thing to do but it also helps make the city a healthier and more productive place.
By doing this Kampala Capital City Authority is setting an example for other employers in Uganda. Kampala Capital City Authority and breastfeeding rooms like this one are very important, for working mothers and their babies.
