Kampala/Misenyi, Uganda/Tanzania – May 14, 2026 – The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) have reaffirmed their commitment to deeper bilateral security ties, following a successful three-day inaugural proximity commanders’ meeting held in Misenyi District, Tanzania.
The meeting, which took place from May 7 to 9, 2026, brought together senior commanders from the TPDF’s 202 Infantry Brigade and the UPDF’s 1 Infantry Division to discuss practical measures for enhancing peace and stability along the shared border.
Key outcomes include enhanced intelligence sharing, joint surveillance, and coordinated operations aimed at addressing cross-border security threats. Both sides emphasised mutual respect, trust, and collective responsibility in maintaining a secure and peaceful frontier.
Addressing participants, Brig. Gen. Kwiligwa of the TPDF highlighted the importance of sustained collaboration. The two forces resolved to institutionalise the engagement by holding proximity commanders’ meetings on a rotational basis every six months.
This latest development builds on longstanding historical ties between the two armies, including Tanzania’s pivotal role in Uganda’s liberation struggles. It also complements broader bilateral cooperation in trade, energy, infrastructure, and regional peace initiatives within the East African Community framework.
Analysts view the strengthened security partnership as critical for regional stability, especially amid ongoing concerns over cross-border crimes, smuggling, and potential spillover effects from conflicts in neighbouring areas. The agreement is expected to boost investor confidence along the border regions and support smooth movement of goods and people between the two countries.
UPDF and TPDF spokespersons described the meeting as “fruitful and forward-looking,” signalling a new chapter in defence diplomacy between the neighbouring nations.
