BREAKING: Police Block NUP Meeting at Eastern Regional Headquarters in Iganga

In a move that has raised fresh concerns over political freedoms, Uganda Police on Saturday morning cordoned off the National Unity Platform (NUP)’s Eastern Regional Headquarters in Iganga, preventing a scheduled internal party meeting.

According to NUP officials, the gathering was intended as a private session between party leaders and elected officials from the Busoga region. NUP Secretary General Joel Rubongoya and Mobilization Secretary Andrew Kiiza Kaluya confirmed that the party had notified police in advance, as required by law. However, officers at the scene demanded additional clearance from the Inspector General of Police (IGP), effectively halting the meeting.

“This was not a public rally or political procession but an internal party coordination meeting on our own premises,” a party source told TrendingUG.com. “We complied with all necessary notifications, yet we continue to face unnecessary restrictions.”

The incident comes amid heightened political activity as parties position themselves following the 2026 general elections. NUP officials described the blockade as part of a pattern of interference, particularly in the Busoga region where the party claims growing support.

Police have not yet issued an official statement on the matter. Attempts by TrendingUG.com to reach the regional police spokesperson were unsuccessful at the time of publishing.

Broader Context

The National Unity Platform, led by Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), has repeatedly accused security agencies of selective application of the Public Order Management Act. Similar incidents have been reported in recent months as opposition parties intensify grassroots mobilisation.

Political analysts say such restrictions could further strain relations between the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) government and the opposition, especially as Uganda navigates post-election realities.

Residents in Iganga expressed mixed reactions, with some expressing frustration over what they termed “unnecessary tension” in the area, while others defended the need for law and order.

As Uganda’s political landscape remains dynamic, developments from this Iganga standoff are being closely monitored by human rights observers and political stakeholders.
