Kampala, July 29, 2026 — Nation Media Group Uganda has begun restoring its full suite of television, radio, print and digital services after a one-month interruption, following authorisation by President Yoweri Museveni.
The media house, which operates Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, Spark TV, 93.3 KFM, 90.4 Dembe FM and related platforms, announced the progressive return of operations on Tuesday. In a statement, NMG Chairman Joe Muganda said services would be restored in phases as the company finalises operational arrangements.
“As we return to serving you, our focus remains the delivery of trusted and balanced journalism across all our platforms,” Muganda stated.
The shutdown began in the early hours of June 28, when security personnel deployed at the group’s Namuwongo headquarters and broadcast facilities, preventing staff access and halting newspaper production and on-air transmissions. The action followed social media posts by Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who cited concerns over the outlet’s reporting.
Over the subsequent weeks, high-level engagements took place involving Taifa Group Chairman Rostam Azizi — whose investment vehicle holds a controlling stake in Nation Media Group — Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and President Museveni. Azizi later thanked the President for authorising the resumption and acknowledged Gen. Muhoozi’s role in the discussions that led to the decision.
Taifa Group described the reopening as an important step for regional investment and media development. NMG Uganda Managing Director Susan Nsibirwa and other senior executives remained engaged with regulators, including the Uganda Communications Commission, throughout the period to resolve outstanding issues.
The return of one of East Africa’s largest independent media organisations ends a significant disruption that affected hundreds of staff and left a notable gap in Uganda’s information landscape. Operations are expected to scale up steadily in the coming days as technical and logistical preparations are completed.
Authorities have not publicly detailed the specific outcomes of the security-led inquiry that preceded the closure. The company has reiterated its commitment to professional journalism and continued service to Ugandan audiences.
