Busia, Uganda – Police in Busia District foiled a daring early morning attack at Busia Police Station on Thursday, May 7, 2026, shooting and arresting a 40-year-old man who allegedly drew a concealed panga and attempted to slash officers while claiming to be “God.”
The suspect, identified as Godfrey Were, also known as Nasaye, arrived at the station around dawn pretending to report a case. According to police accounts, he suddenly produced a machete (panga) at the counter and launched an attack on officers before being shot and subdued.
Were sustained injuries from the shooting but survived and was promptly arrested. In a subsequent interview with Daily Monitor while in custody, the self-proclaimed “God” made startling revelations. “I am ‘God’, and I was at the police station to know who they serve and to make them repent their sins,” he told the publication.
Police recovered bundles of marijuana from the suspect, raising questions about possible intoxication or other motives behind the bizarre incident. Speaking to the media, a police spokesperson described the attack as unexpected and confirmed that investigations are underway to establish the full motive. “This suspect is claiming to be God, but as police we have launched investigations to establish the motive of the early morning attack,” the officer stated.
The incident sent shockwaves through the Busia community, with residents expressing concern over the rising cases of individuals exhibiting erratic behaviour in public spaces. No officers were seriously injured in the confrontation, authorities confirmed.
Busia, a busy border town connecting Uganda and Kenya, has in the past witnessed isolated security incidents, but an armed assault on the main police station by a lone attacker claiming divine powers is rare.
As investigations continue, police have appealed for calm and urged members of the public with any information regarding Were’s background or possible accomplices to come forward. Were remains under police custody receiving treatment for his gunshot wounds.
