KAMPALA. Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has been released from house arrest after than one hundred days of restricted movement following a directive from President Yoweri Museveni. I was relieved to see this step as it brings a moment of relief to many who have followed this case.
The development was first announced by Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba on August 25 2026. In a post on X Gen. Muhoozi stated that President Museveni had instructed Gen. Muhoozi to lift the restrictions on Among, who is popularly referred to by her initials AAA and that Among would not face prosecution.
Mzee has also instructed Gen. Muhoozi to release AAA from house arrest. Gen. Muhoozi will do that well. Gen. Muhoozi will not prosecute AAA. Among made mistakes but Mzee has decided to forgive Among. It feels like a breath of air to hear Mzee decide to forgive Among.
Among the Woman Member of Parliament for Bukedea District confirmed Amongs freedom a day later in Amongs public statement since May. Writing on X Among gratitude to President Museveni and Gen. Muhoozi. Amongs public statement was a moment for supporters.
“I take this opportunity to thank the Almighty God for the gift of life and freedom. My profound and heartfelt appreciation goes to His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for His unmatched parental grace and decision to grant Among mercy ” Among said.
Among also thanked the Chief of Defence Forces for his professionalism during the period. Declared Amongs intention to resume legislative duties. “As the Woman MP for Bukedea I look forward to continuing my work for my constituents and standing firm with our leadership ” Among added.
Among had been confined to Amongs residences in Nakasero and Kigo since mid-May 2026. Joint security forces raided the properties as part of investigations into corruption, abuse of office and illicit enrichment linked to Amongs time as Speaker of the 11th Parliament. The probe also examined the accumulation of assets, bank accounts and parliamentary expenditures.
The former Speaker stepped aside from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament shortly after the raids began. Jacob Oboth Oboth was subsequently elected to the position.
Sources indicated that Special Forces Command personnel who had been deployed at Amongs homes withdrew following President Musevenis directive restoring Amongs freedom of movement.
The release marks a turn in one of Ugandas most closely watched political cases of 2026. Among rose from Deputy Speaker to Speaker in March 2022 after the death of Jacob Oulanyah. Became one of the most prominent figures in the National Resistance Movement.
While President Musevenis decision ends the threat of prosecution the broader investigations into the matters raised during Amongs tenure remain a subject of public interest. Officials have not issued a statement on the status of any ongoing inquiries.
Political observers note that the pardon reflects President Musevenis powers, in high-profile cases. Amongs return to parliamentary work is expected to draw significant attention in the coming weeks as Among re-engages with Amongs constituents and the House.
