President Museveni Renews Dr. Johnson Byabashaija’s Tenure as Prisons Commissioner Genera

President Yoweri Museveni has extended the tenure of Dr. Johnson Byabashaija as the Commissioner General of Prisons for another two years, effective May 4, according to a statement released on Wednesday.

This renewal marks Dr. Byabashaija’s continued leadership of the Uganda Prisons Services, a position he has held since 2005. President Museveni previously renewed his contract in January 2022, and the current term is set to expire soon.

Under the Uganda Public Service Standing Orders (2010), individuals can be employed on contract terms after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60, with contracts typically lasting for two years unless specified otherwise by the appointing authority.

Dr. Byabashaija’s leadership has been commended for the transformation of the prison system, with President Museveni praising the institution’s discipline and lack of significant issues.

In his recent remarks, President Museveni applauded the commitment to discipline within the prisons, highlighting the implementation of courses and promotional exams as contributing factors to the institution’s success.

Dr. Johnson Byabashaija’s journey in the Uganda Prisons Services began in 1983, and over the years, he has risen through the ranks to assume the role of Commissioner General, overseeing various reforms and improvements within the organization
