Hon. Nabilah Naggayi Speaks Out on Her Strained Relationship with NUP

My challenge is that I am not conversant with NUP, because I did not stay in it. I was almost like a visitor

Former Kampala Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Nabilah Naggayi Ssempala, has opened up about her challenges within the National Unity Platform (NUP), admitting that she never truly felt at home in the party.

Speaking candidly, Nabilah stated: “My challenge is that I am not conversant with NUP, because I did not stay in it. I was almost like a visitor.”

Her remarks highlight the internal struggles and adjustments that come with shifting political alliances in Uganda’s charged political landscape. Nabilah, who joined NUP ahead of the 2021 general elections after years as a Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) legislator, was one of the high-profile figures who crossed over to join the wave of youthful opposition under Bobi Wine’s leadership.

However, her revelation suggests that her time within NUP may have been marked by discomfort, lack of integration, and perhaps unresolved mistrust. This has sparked fresh debates among political observers about the challenges of unity among opposition forces, especially when veteran politicians transition into new political movements.

For many Ugandans, her statement reflects a broader issue — the difficulty of building strong, cohesive political organizations in a climate of fear, repression, and shifting loyalties. While some critics argue that Nabilah failed to adapt to the culture and values of NUP, her defenders say her experience exposes a need for inclusivity, mentorship, and stronger internal cohesion within opposition parties.

As Uganda continues to grapple with calls for political change, Hon. Nabilah’s reflections serve as a reminder that building a durable opposition movement requires not only shared ideals but also trust, belonging, and the ability to accommodate diverse voices.
