Mbarara, Uganda – September 26, 2025 – In a significant move to strengthen its foothold in Western Uganda, National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, officially opened the party’s new Western Regional Headquarters in Mbarara City today. The event, held at the headquarters located next to Independence Park, marks a milestone for the opposition party as it expands its infrastructure in preparation for the 2026 general elections.

The new offices, which will serve as a command center for NUP’s activities across the entire Western region, were constructed on land purchased over a year ago. Party leaders emphasized that the development was kept under wraps to avoid potential sabotage from the ruling regime, allowing construction to proceed smoothly. “We purchased this place over one year ago and embarked on constructing these offices. We’re glad that from today, our regional operations will be coordinated from here! WE ARE THE NATIONAL UNITY PLATFORM!” Bobi Wine stated in a post on X, highlighting the party’s commitment to building lasting structures.

NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya described the opening as a testament to the party’s discipline and sacrifice. “Today, the National Unity Platform reaches yet another milestone. We’re glad that information about this place was kept under wraps for over a year and so we were able to avoid the usual sabotage by the regime,” Rubongoya shared on X. Similarly, NUP Spokesperson and Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi noted, “We have today unveiled our permanent home in Mbarara City, the Western Uganda regional headquarters for NUP. This will be our command center for all the activities and offices we have in the wider western Uganda.”

The inauguration comes just a month after NUP opened its Eastern Regional Headquarters in Iganga on August 25, 2025, which Bobi Wine presided over, underscoring the party’s strategy to decentralize operations and enhance coordination at the regional level. That facility, also built discreetly, aims to mobilize efforts in Eastern Uganda, a region long marginalized economically under the current administration, according to party statements. NUP’s manifesto promises inclusive economic policies, including decentralized resource allocation to ensure regions like Western and Eastern Uganda receive a fair share of national development.

Attendees at the Mbarara event included senior party leaders, members of parliament, and supporters who gathered to celebrate the launch. Videos and photos from the ceremony show Bobi Wine addressing crowds, cutting ribbons, and touring the new premises, which are designed to facilitate mobilization, administrative tasks, and community outreach. Local media outlets, including 97.8 Kazo FM, reported that the offices are intended to streamline NUP’s activities in Western Uganda, a key battleground area historically dominated by the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

This expansion reflects NUP’s growth since its formation as the political wing of the People Power movement in 2020. Founded in Kamwokya, Kampala, the party has positioned itself as a progressive force advocating for social liberation, youth empowerment, and an end to long-standing political marginalization. With existing offices in other regions like Northern Uganda (including Gulu, Lira, and Arua), NUP continues to build a nationwide network despite facing challenges such as alleged government interference.

As Uganda gears up for the 2026 polls, analysts suggest that NUP’s regional investments could bolster its grassroots mobilization and challenge the NRM’s dominance in areas like Western Uganda. The party’s slogan, “#ProtestVote2026,” echoed throughout the event, signaling a call for change among disillusioned voters.
