Police Bust Major Motorcycle Theft Ring: Over 80 Suspected Stolen Bikes Recovered in Kasubi Raid

In a major victory for road users and boda boda operators across the capital, Kampala Metropolitan Police have recovered over 80 suspected stolen motorcycles in a swift intelligence-driven raid at Mukozi Day and Night Parking in Kasubi suburb.

Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the operation, which took place on Tuesday evening, leading to the arrest of nine suspects believed to be part of a well-organized network involved in stealing and concealing motorcycles. Preliminary investigations suggest many of the recovered bikes — predominantly Bajaj Boxer models — were stolen from districts including Masaka and Hoima before being ferried to Kampala for hiding or resale.

The haul marks one of the largest single recoveries in recent memory and comes as authorities intensify efforts to curb the rampant theft of motorcycles, which has left thousands of riders without livelihoods and heightened insecurity on Kampala’s roads.

“These motorcycles were seized from a parking yard where suspects were allegedly hiding and possibly altering them,” Owoyesigyire stated. Teams from Police and the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) are now working round the clock to verify ownership, registration details, and reunite the bikes with their legitimate owners.

Boda boda riders and residents in affected areas have welcomed the breakthrough but continue to demand more proactive measures, including increased night patrols, better-lit parking facilities, and stricter regulation of second-hand motorcycle markets.

This operation is part of a broader crackdown on urban crime in Kampala Metropolitan area. Similar raids in recent weeks have netted dozens more suspects and additional stolen bikes in divisions like Kampala Metropolitan East and Mukono, signaling a sustained push by security forces to restore public confidence.

The arrested suspects are expected to face charges of theft, handling stolen property, and related offenses. Police have appealed to the public to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities involving motorcycles, and always secure their bikes with anti-theft devices while maintaining proper documentation.
