Ghana’s New Train Collides with Lorry During Test Run

In an unexpected turn of events, a train acquired by Ghana from Poland collided with a lorry during a test run in the Eastern Region, causing a stir among authorities and locals alike.

The incident occurred on the tracks of the Tema-Mpakadan railway line, where the train rammed into the abandoned vehicle, resulting in minor damage to the train’s cabin area. Fortunately, the train driver, railway inspectors, and passengers all emerged unscathed from the collision.

Authorities swiftly responded, arresting the driver of the abandoned lorry. Investigations revealed that the lorry was left unattended on the railway line, a reckless act that led to the collision.

Expressing dismay over the incident, Railways Minister John Peter Amewu denounced the act as “unfortunate, irresponsible, and unpatriotic!” on social media.

Despite the mishap, Ghana remains committed to enhancing its railway transport system. The country recently acquired two diesel-powered trains from Poland, with the first one already in operation on the Tema-Mpakadan line. The second train is set to arrive later this year, further bolstering Ghana’s rail infrastructure.

The Tema-Mpakadan line, spanning 100km, represents a significant step towards improving public transport and opening up Ghana’s eastern corridor. It is part of a larger project aiming to connect Ghana and Burkina Faso through the port of Tema, promising enhanced regional connectivity and economic opportunities.

As investigations into the collision continue, authorities assure the public of the safe operation of Ghana’s railway system, reaffirming their commitment to ensuring efficient and reliable transportation across the country.
