Crackdown on Negligence: Police to Revoke Licences of Errant Private Security Firms

In a bid to address growing concerns over the mishandling of firearms by private security companies, the police are set to take decisive action this week by releasing a list of seven firms whose licences will be revoked.

Over the years, the police have observed a disturbing trend of private security firms failing to adhere to established guidelines regarding the storage, transportation, and handling of firearms. Fred Enanga, the Police spokesperson, expressed deep concern over incidents involving security guards, citing cases of attacks, crimes, and violence against clients.

Enanga highlighted a surge in firearm-related crimes perpetrated by security guards, often exacerbated by reckless behavior such as openly carrying firearms on the streets. Such actions not only pose a threat to public safety but also sow fear and mistrust among citizens.

To curb these alarming trends, police commanders have been instructed to take stringent measures, including arresting individual security guards found violating firearm protocols, especially those moving alone or using motorcycles (boda bodas).

Furthermore, the police have reached out to the association of private security firms, urging them to enhance supervisory measures to prevent negligence and misconduct among their members.

A comprehensive review of private security firms is underway, with the Crime Intelligence Directorate conducting thorough background checks. This initiative aims to identify firms that have consistently flouted regulations, leading to the suspension or cancellation of their licences.

In addition to the seven firms facing licence revocation, another 20 are under evaluation for possible suspension. The police are committed to upholding strict standards within the private security sector to ensure the safety and security of the public.
