Israel Weighs Response to Iran’s Unprecedented Attack as UN Calls for De-Escalation

Israel’s war cabinet is set to reconvene at 2 pm local time (11:00 GMT) to discuss its course of action following Iran’s first-ever direct attack against its longstanding foe. Amid these tensions, Israeli forces carried out fresh strikes on the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, resulting in five deaths and dozens of injuries.

As the United Nations Security Council gathered to deliberate over Iran’s retaliatory actions against Israel, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged restraint and called for de-escalation, emphasizing the global stakes of another conflict in the Middle East.

Since October 7, Israeli attacks on Gaza have claimed at least 33,797 Palestinian lives and wounded 76,465 people. In Israel, the death toll from Hamas’s October 7 attacks has reached 1,139, with dozens of individuals remaining captive.
