Former NEMA Executive Director Dr. Tom Okurut Passes Away

Dr. Tom Okurut, the former Executive Director of the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), has sadly passed away yesterday afternoon at Platinum Hospital in Kampala. His death followed a brief illness stemming from complications related to a blood clot progressing towards his brain.

According to a close family member, Dr. Okurut experienced severe headaches, prompting his admission to Platinum Hospital for urgent surgery on Friday. Despite the medical intervention, his condition deteriorated, and he ultimately succumbed to the illness.

Dr. Okurut led NEMA from 2011 until his retirement in July 2021. His leadership was renewed in 2016, reflecting his dedication to Uganda’s environmental protection and management.

The loss of Dr. Okurut leaves a significant void in Uganda’s environmental sector. He was well-regarded for his commitment and impactful work during his tenure at NEMA.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course as the nation mourns the passing of a distinguished environmentalist and public servant
