A report by the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration, released in July 2023, revealed that visa rejection rates in Africa far exceed those in other regions, with Ethiopian, Nigerian, and Kenyan students bearing the brunt of the ordeal.
Fanta Aw, executive director of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to understand the underlying factors behind these alarming statistics. Meetings with U.S. State Department officials have been held to advocate for changes in visa adjudication processes, with ongoing efforts to address the issue.
Data from public records requests paint a concerning picture, with African students experiencing denial rates of up to 78% in some cases, a stark contrast to their European counterparts.
Leon Fresco, a Washington-based immigration lawyer, emphasized the urgency of rectifying this disparity, warning of its detrimental impact on international education. High visa denial rates not only discourage prospective students but also hinder the exchange of talent and ideas crucial for global progress.
